One of a small number of original photographs dating to Babe Ruth‘s rookie season–one taken just prior to his first World Series– is about to hit the auction block.
Heritage Auctions will feature the photo in its October Premium Auction where it’s expected to sell for at least $50,000.
The 4 x 4 3/4″ news photo features the 20-year-old Ruth posing with fellow members of the Boston Red Sox pitching staff. Dated in vintage pencil on the back “10-7-15” the photo is a somewhat well known image of the group, with another resting in the archives of the Smithsonian.
The photo’s date matches the last day of the regular season when Boston played a meaningless game against the Yankees before the start of the World Series where the powerhouse squad would dispatch the Philadelphia A’s in five games. It’s likely photographers were dispatched to the park to snap some images that would help newspapers preview the upcoming championship showdown.
Sent to the bullpen while Shore and Foster handled the bulk of the pitching duties, Ruth did get to pinch hit in Game 1 of the series, but grounded out. He went 18-8 during the regular season with a 2.44 ERA, while batting over .300 and hitting the first four of his 714 career home runs.
Bidding in the auction is scheduled to open September 25.
