A 20-year-old Babe Ruth looking at photos of himself as a rookie is a tantalizing start, but the latest RMY Auctions catalog has plenty more where that gem came from.
The company that specializes in historic images culled from decades old newspaper archives has brought over 900 lots to market with its current sale .
One of the more fascinating shots shows Ruth sitting with Red Sox teammates Ernie Shore, Ray Collins and Hick Cady inside the offices of Underwood and Underwood, the New York photography company.
The photo appears to have been taken October 4, 1915 when Boston was in town preparing for a doubleheader against the Yankees. The caption on the 6 1/4″ x 8 1/2″ photo is dated the next day, when Ruth and Collins pitched the powerful Sox to a sweep.
Numerous other Ruth photos are part of the auction including one from the day of the inaugural Baseball All-Star Game in Chicago. The 1933 image shows Ruth with American League teammates Al Simmons and Charlie Gehringer on the field before the historic contest at Comiskey Park.
There’s a newly discovered copy of the famous Charles Conlon image of a smiling Lou Gehrig during the 1926 season and a Conlon photo taken on Opening Day in 1912 when New York’s American League club sported its now iconic pinstripes for the first time and played under its new nickname—the Yankees.
In all, the auction features 49 photos featuring Ruth, Gehrig or both.
Among the other top lots are two photos of Satchel Paige dating to the 1940s. One shows him showing his form to Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander while another captures him pitching for Cleveland as he makes one of his first appearances in a major league game.
From the collection of photographer Stephen Greene come some original photos from Michael Jordan’s rookie season, one in which Jordan’s famous tongue hangs out of his mouth as he drives the baseline.
Another modern era basketball photo shows a teenage Kobe Bryant signing autographs for fans at the 1996 McDonalds All-American Game.
The auction runs through August 5 at RMYAuctions.com.
