RMY Auctions has opened its January Collectors Auction with over 500 items on the block including a 1912 photo of Christy Mathewson from the archives of the long-defunct New York Herald.
Being offered publicly for the first time, the 5×7 image of Mathewson carries an original file stamp date on the back from October of 1912, not long after Mathewson famously pitched three complete games in the World Series, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion.
The silver gelatin photo was heavily used by the newspaper’s photo staff and carries some creases. There’s a short newspaper clipping affixed to the back along with the ‘N.Y. Herald Syndicate’ stamp and several other file stamps from use in later years.
Mathewson was spectacular in the 1912 World Series, finishing with an ERA of 0.94. Five errors cost him a win in Game 2, which finished in a darkness-shortened tie and forced an eighth game. Fred Snodgrass’ dropped fly ball, a Mathewson walk, and a short pop up that should have been caught led to the winning run and gave the World Series to the Red Sox.
Bidding runs through January 12 at RMYAuctions.com.
