Two young men at the top of their craft would meet for a brief moment over 109 years ago. The resulting full body photograph of New York Giants star pitcher Christy Mathewson taken by Paul Thompson is now one of the featured attractions at RMY Auctions.
Never offered at public auction until now and believed to be a new discovery, the Mathewson photo is among over 1,200 rare and historic photographs offered in the company’s December Premier Auction. Bidding opened at $25 but within hours, had rocketed past $1,700 and is expected to go much higher.
The 6 ½” x 8 ½” silver gelatin image remains in near perfect condition, with only some light corner wear. Considered one of the best Mathewson “action” images ever taken, it was recorded during one of the 27-year-old pitcher’s pre-game warmup sessions in a year when the Bucknell graduate tossed 315 innings, won 24 games, sported a 2.00 ERA and tossed 31 complete games.
Thompson’s photo service captured many of the game’s most important players and images during the early part of the 20th century. Many of them were used to create well-known baseball cards issued during the time period.
Two other rare Mathewson photos are also among the lots being offered.
The auction continues through December 10 at RMYAuctions.com.
