Another 19th century Cincinnati Redlegs card is set to hit the auction block this week.
SCP Auctions opens its second internet auction of the year this week with the inclusion of one of the finest known 1869 Peck & Snyder Cincinnati Red Stockings trade cards.
One of the first baseball cards issued, the 1869 relic features baseball’s first professional team, led by Harry and George Wright. Both Harry, the team’s manager and center fielder, and George, the team’s shortstop and best player, are enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Seeing the importance and growing popularity of the emerging sport of baseball, Peck & Snyder sought to gain recognition for their sporting goods store by applying team photos on their advertisements. With that, the birth of a hobby was born.
It’s the fourth sale of a Peck & Snyder card this year, coming just months after the "Fresno Find" which made national headlines when sold by Memory Lane Auctions. Robert Edward Auctions sold one in April and Goodwin & Company sold large and small versions in one of its recent auctions.
“This is certainly a fantastic find,” said David Kohler, president of SCP Auctions. “The beautiful condition of this card is remarkable and is sure to bring spirited bidding.”
Additional vintage sport card rarities being sold by SCP include a 1909-11 T206 Eddie Plank PSA EX 5, 1909-11 T206 Ty Cobb Lenox Brown Back SGC 30 GOOD, 1909 E90-1 American Caramel Joe Jackson PSA FR 1.5, 1915 Cracker Jack #103 Joe Jackson PSA NM-MT 8 and a T210 Old Mill Series 8 Joe Jackson PSA GOOD 2.
