Collectors may not realize it, but buying and selling sports meorabilia via eBay can put money in the bank accounts of charities.
eBay Giving Works began in 2003, with non-profit organizations signing up as beneficiaries from the millions of dollars in bidding activity that take place each day on the site. The program is much more, of course, but buyers and sellers can both contribute.
eBay Sellers can pledge to donate 10%-100% of their item’s final sale price to any nonprofit organization certified for the program. When the item sells, the seller gets a rebate on basic fees, prorated at the same percentage as the donation commitment, and the donation is automatically processed by MissionFish (www.missionfish.org), eBay’s nonprofit partner.
eBay Buyers can search for and purchase these items, identified in search results by the distinctive blue-and-yellow ribbon. eBay Give @Checkout allows buyers to donate $1, $2, $5, $10 or $25 to a nonprofit with one click whenever they buy on eBay. Since Aug. 2008, buyers have donated more than $7.5 million through Give@Checkout in the US and UK (As of April 2010).
Nonprofits can receive donations and sell their own goods for free to raise funds on eBay. More than 22,000 nonprofits have registered with MissionFish to participate in the program.
When shopping through the special eBay Giving Works portal, buyers can pick a cause from among:
- Protect the Environment
- Saving Animals

You can then pick an eBay category, like Sports Cards and Memorabilia and search for items available from sellers participating in the Giving Works program.
