A Pennsylvania man is facing numerous counts of misdemeanor theft after police say he switched price stickers on boxes of trading cards at a local Target—even changing clothes between his crimes in an effort to avoid being caught.
Local media reports say 33-year-old Grant M. Duss of Shaler (PA) is accused of stealing more than $4,200 worth of cards from the store between Dec. 20, 2022 and Jan. 10 of this year. He’s facing 14 misdemeanor counts of theft, one count of possessing a criminal instrument and four summary counts of theft.
Investigators say Duss carried out multiple price switching capers in a single day—five in a row on one occasion. Charging documents indicate he left the store, changed clothes and returned later to pilfer more merchandise.
Police say he would place the barcode of a 79-cent item over the one from a more expensive trading card box and ring himself up through the self-checkout lanes.
“We are very lucky here in Cranberry because we have an on-site loss prevention person who I’m sure through inventory, discovered that these trading cards had been where it’s showing up short, and through video, they were able to determine that this was the actor,” Lt. Chuck Mascellino with the Cranberry Township police told WPXI-TV.
Duss is scheduled for a preliminary hearing June 30.
