A collection of unopened boxes, single cards and autographs from a one owner collection will be on the block through Hindman Auctions this month.
A 1986-87 Fleer Basketball box with a pack containing a Michael Jordan rookie card on top is the headliner in the 89-lot auction that takes place on Friday, March 24.
The “Grails and GOATS” auction consists of 89 lots, including the BBCE certified Fleer Basketball box, unopened vending boxes, standout rookie cards and autographs from past sports legends.
Hindman calls the ’86-87 Fleer box “one of the finest examples of this stried issue ever to come to market.”
“Rarely do we come upon examples of unopened boxes like this from the 1986-1987 period that have been so perfectly maintained, let alone with one of the most sought-after cards, the No. 57 Michael Jordan rookie card on top,” commented James Smith, Hindman Senior Sports Memorabilia Specialist. “Not only is this box an incredible item on its own, it also anchors a collection that was curated with intention and care with the goal of creating the ultimate display of modern sports history.”
A single Beckett graded Jordan rookie card and Upper Deck Authenticated Jordan autographs are also part of the sale.
Among the other unopened material in the auction is a box of 1980-81 Topps Basketball, potentially with Larry Bird and Magic Johnson rookie cards that carries a $15,000-$25,000 presale estimate and a 1993 Upper Deck SP box potentially containing Derek Jeter’s top rookie card (est., $2,000-$3,000).
An early Kobe Bryant full name official NBA basketball is among the memorabilia in the auction. A large number of Bryant’s autographs feature just his first name with his jersey number. The ball carries a $3,000-$5,000 estimate.
A 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle, several other graded Mantle cards from his career, numerous other Hall of Fame rookie cards and complete Topps baseball sets from 1960 and ’71 are also part of the catalog..
