In an era when even the most mundane sports artifacts are taken from the field of play, tagged with a hologram, authenticated and put into locked storage, it seems almost unbelievable.
The stick Sidney Crosby used to score the goal that gave Canada its Olympic gold medal–perhaps the greatest or second greatest triumph in that country’s sporting history– remains missing.
Crosby doesn’t know what happened to it. Neither do those in charge of the big auction that the Vancouver Organizing Committee is holding on eBay. The celebration is what those inside the arena were watching–not what happened to the players’ game-used gear.
But to lose track of the most famous stick since Bobby Orr’s flying goal in the Stanley Cup playoffs?
It’s a national treasure.
Now, Reebok Canada is hoping someone will come forward. They’ve offered a $10,000 reward for the safe return of the stick–and one of Crosby’s gloves that’s also missing.
Yahoo Sports has the story–and links to a few others with some theories on what may have happened and why one dealer thinks it’s worth at least five times that amount.
