Vintage Photo of the Day: “Gee, Thanks Melvin!”

He was just 5’9 and about 170 pounds but National League pitchers treated Mel Ott the way their AL colleagues treated Babe Ruth.

Mel Ott signing autographs 1929“Melvin” Ott, as the papers called him early on, led the league in homers six times and led the Giants in that category for 18 straight years, a mark no one has ever topped.

Our Vintage Photo of the Day from RMY Auctions is this classic from the summer of 1929.  Ott was just 20 years old at the time and young fans at the Polo Grounds were seeking him out for his autograph.

The photo was taken June 25, just before Ott belted his 21st homer of the year.

Measuring 6 1/2’” by 8 ½”, the ACME News Service photo is in exceptional condition after 85 years.  It was recently freed from decades-long storage by RMY Auctions, which purchased the archive of a major newspaper.

The back includes a caption and a date stamp from when the photo was filed.

The Ott photo is one of hundreds of historic images up for bid in this month’s auction, which you can see here.  Bidding closes April 15.
