North of the border, Classic Auctions has wrapped up a major auction featuring NHL game worn jerseys and more.
Game worn jerseys of Hockey Hall of Famers, Stanley Cup trophies and even an historic pair of Wayne Gretzky skates drew bidders to Classic Auctions’ March sale.
The company offered hundreds of items, with a strong emphasis on vintage NHL memorabilia. Part of the auction was a fundraiser for the foundation created by Montreal Canadiens’ great Jean Beliveau and a number of items from his collection generated strong activity including his 1972-73 Stanley Cup player trophy which saw 22 bids a whopping $32,211. With Classic’s 17.5% buyer’s premium, the realized price was actually $37,848. Beliveau’s 1969 game-worn Canadiens’ sweater sold for $25, 865.
The top selling item was a Bobby Baun 1967 Toronto Maple Leafs championship ring which sold for $38,708. A 1933 game-worn Johnny Gagnon Canadiens’ sweater sold for $33,547.
The skates worn by Wayne Gretzky when he scored his 500th career goal brought $23,032 while an autographed game-worn 1988-89 LA Kings Gretzky jersey brought $12,491. Sidney Crosby’s popularity can’t be denied–and Sid the Kid may be approaching Gretzky-like status in the eyes of some. A 2007-08 Crosby gamer sold for $12,300.
There was some baseball memorabilia in the auction including a 1971 game-worn Rusty Staub uniform that was part of an extensive collection of Montreal Expos memorabilia that was consigned to Classic. It sold for $8923. A 1951 Bowman Willie Mays rookie card, graded PSA 7, sold for $3055.
