Topps revs up the 2012 baseball card season beginning today with its first high-end product of the year. Topps Tribute was scheduled to hit store shelves, promising a variety of autographs from legendary players it has under contract as well as a collection of current stars.
The typically popular Heritage issue will take the stage less than a week later. While each product is aimed at a different type of collector, many will chase both and the company isn’t giving much time for Tribute to get legs before the next big product release. Collectors may initially struggle to come up with the cash to pay for a box or two of each.
2012 Topps Tribute boxes, which have been selling online for $275 and up, pack a potentially potent punch. There will be six packs per box and five cards per pack and Topps has promised three autographs numbered to 99 or less—on card—per box along with the usual parallel versions and a trio of relic cards as well.
Included in the autograph checklist are Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Sandy Koufax, Albert Pujols, Ken Griffey Jr. and several dozen other stars, semi-stars and youngsters. You’ll have to hit at least one top shelf Hall of Fame type player to make this one pay off. One nice touch is that all autograph and relic cards will be encased before being packed into hobby boxes. Topps originally solicited that the ‘Tribute to the Stars’ autograph insert would appear in sealed boxes as an incremental hit. The card is in product, but was not delivered as an incremental hit. Collectors have been finding it as one of their regular autographs so late Friday, the company decided to make amends.
Topps is encouraging collectors that opened a sealed box of 2012 Topps Tribute Baseball and received one of the cards to send the card to Topps to receive a pack of 2011 Bowman Sterling Baseball (2 Autographs and 1 Relic).
Each card will be verified (via sequential numbering) and can only be submitted once. The card will be returned with the pack of Bowman Sterling.
Collectors mailing in their cards should send to:

The offer will expire March 9, 2013
