Topps is planning special location-only sets for baseball’s All Star Fan Fest and the National Sports Collectors Convention.
Topps is cooking up a special set of 1958-retro cards for this summer’s National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago but you’ll have to be a VIP to get one.
It’s a 5-card issue the NSCC says will mimic the original 1958 Topps cards. In fact, some of the ’58 Topps cards in this set are variations on the original cards. Some ’58 cards were issued with yellow letters as opposed to the common white lettering on either the players name or the team name, card fronts. The Yellow Team Letter variations are scarce and therefore, more valuable.
This year, the Topps National VIP issue will feature Mickey Mantle, Ernie Banks and Ted Williams, team Yellow Team Letter variations. There were no Yellow Letter cards of these player’s cards back in 1958. Topps has also created a special tribute card to Mickey Mantle as the ‘Home Run King’ in 1958 – a card that never was. The set will also includ a "pre-rookie card" of Baseball Hall of Famer Bob Gibson.
Collectors who purchase a $119 advance or $129 on-site VIP package will receive a package of four of the cards as part of their admission. The show runs from July 30-August 3 at the Stephens Convention Center in Chicago.
Topps is also producing a 5-card eTopps set in the Allen & Ginter format for the show. The set includes Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson, Johnny Unitas, Yogi Berra-Don Larsen and Mickey Mantle.
Topps will also have a presence at the 2008 Major League Baseball All Star Fan Fest show being held next month in New York. Fans and collectors opening three packs of 2008 Topps/Bowman branded baseball cards at the Topps booth will receive an exclusive FanFest Topps card. There will be 8 different cards. All will be available throughout the entirety of show.
The identity of the first card hasn’t been released. #2 through #8 include:
2 of 8 Jackie Robinson, Brooklyn Dodgers
3 of 8 Alex Rodriguez, New York Yankees
4 of 8 David Wright, New York Mets
5 of 8 Lou Gehrig, New York Yankees
6 of 8 Joba Chamberlain, New York Yankees
7 of 8 Mickey Mantle, New York Yankees (image attached)
8 of 8 Johan Santana, New York Mets
Topps will also offer a special 2008 factory set in a commemorative 2008 All-Star box. As a bonus, the set includes five exclusive Yankee Legends cards (cards 1-5) and an additional 5-card set, produced just for the 2008 All-Star FanFest which includes Alex Rodriguez, Joba Chamberlain, Chien Ming Wang, Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada.
