Long time collector Dave Hornish, who has chronicled numerous Topps issues through his blog over the last few years, has just finished a comprehensive history of the
company’s first 18 years.
The Modern Hobby Guide To Topps Chewing Gum: 1938-1956 includes information on how Topps got started, background on its founding and a price guide. Of course, the company didn’t produce baseball cards until 1951 and so you’ll also learn quite a bit about what the company was up to before bubble gum cards.
The production of the early sports and non-sports card issues is discussed as well as the company’s eventual takeover of Bowman. There is also a companion blog for the Guide: http://themodernhobbyguide.blogspot.com/ where updates, corrections and news items will be archived.
