You might remember the name Scott Pierce. Four years ago, he and his customers at SMP Sports Cards in Grapevine, Tex., won an NBA-sponsored contest that turned basketball card wrappers into a hobby shop makeover.
The publicity and the work helped the little shop turn the corner, but it was already a success before that.
Pierce, who worked in the construction business, always wanted a shop of his own. He began to slowly accumulate inventory throughout the 1990s and into the next decade when the store was finally born--a little space in the back of a local gas station.
SMP earned a solid reputation among the locals for having the latest products and also for treating everyone the way he wanted to be treated when he was the customer...even those kids who came in thinking their 1991 Fleer cards were worth a fortune.
The result has gotten noticed.
Jim Gibbs of Star Local News paid a visit recently to find out how the shop has managed to not only survive, but thrive when others haven't.
