Texas Shops Weather Tough Times

Thanks to a group of dedicated customers, a couple of card shops have managed to survive the local shakedown, but it’s not always easy.

Like many cities across the country, Longview, Texas has seen its card shop boom come and go.

Trice Collectibles once had plenty of local competition, but the store has outlasted many in over 20 years of business.

The latest challenge is the economy and a national unemployment rate approaching double digits. It’s left a gap in disposable income that has affected dealers across the country.

Owner Tom Trice and David Rose of Alan’s Comics, another local shop, lean on some hot prospects from the local area to drive sales. The latter store has also done better with football than baseball.

The News Journal checked out the business–and fun side– of the hobby with a story in its online edition.
