More than 60 current and former athletes including Robert Griffin III, Drew Brees, Jim Brown, Dick Butkus, Jerry West and Bill Walton have been booked for the 2013 Chicago Sun-Times Spring Sports Collectibles Convention at the Stephens Convention Center March 22-24.
Mounted Memories, which handles the autograph sessions, says it plans to continue to add signers to the list prior to the Friday night kickoff of the 46th edition of the show, which also includes a few hundred sports card and memorabilia vendors from around the country.
Some of the autograph pricing has raised a few eyebrows.
RG III, recovering from knee surgery, should be a popular draw with fans but you’ll pay $150 minimum for an autograph with actual price depending on the item ($40 more for an inscription and you can get a photo taken with him for another $150). He’ll be joined by at least two other members of the 2012 NFL Draft class. Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin (starting at $60) and Miami quarterback Ryan Tannehill ($50 starting price) have also committed to sign at least one of the three days of the show.
Other NFL signers will include Hall of Famers like Brown ($130) and Butkus ($90) as well as a rare appearance by Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees (starting at $150), Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles, Vikings receiver Percy Harvin, Cowboys’ running back DeMarco Murray and Colts’ receivers TY Hilton and Reggie Wayne. Minnesota’s 1960s “Purple People Eaters” defensive linemen Jim Marshall, Gary Larsen and Carl Eller will attend and pre-signed items from the fourth Eater, Alan Page, will be available. Even Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o, whose name has been in the headlines lately, is on the docket. Te’o’s autograph will cost you $80 minimum.
There are also mini reunions of the 1986 Bears (Jim McMahon =$80), 1969 Mets (Kranepool, Jones and Swoboda) and the 1970s Red Sox (Jim Rice, Carlton Fisk, Dwight Evans and Fred Lynn).
NBA stars committed to come include West ($100), Walton, Robert Parish, Rick Barry, George Gervin and Scottie Pippen.
Admission to the show is $10. Children 7 and under are $5. Show hours are: 4:30-9 pm Friday; 9:30 – 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 am – 4 pm Sunday. VIP admission tickets, which include half hour early entry into the show and several free autographs of less expensive autograph signers will be available. If you can’t make it, some of the athletes’ autographs are available via Mounted Memories’ website. Click this link for a $25 off February 2013 coupon on a purchase of $200 or more.
