Steal of Second Base Prompts Investigation

No, that’s not an April Fool’s joke.

Spriing training is winding down in Florida and the Grapefruit League has produced one last caper–this one involving a piece of baseball memorabilia.

It seems someone broke into a storage area at the New York Yankees’ spring training complex after hours last week and stole–at least temporarily–second base.

Not just any second base, though. This one was parked on the field in the 2007 All-Star game and had been autographed by Mets’ shortstop Jose Reyes. It was part of a sports memorabilia company’s inventory that had been on display during the spring games.

The base eventually turned up, but the story isn’t over yet, according to the local newspaper.
