St. Louis Shop Owner Charged with Rape; Holds Police at Bay

The owner of a St. Louis comic book and sports card shop is behind bars after a standoff with police at his store.

Kenneth McClure (St. Louis PD)

Officers came to the store at 5850 Hampton Avenue just after 5 p.m. last Thursday to serve a warrant on Kenneth McClure, 57, the owner of Legends Comics and Sports Cards, who was accused of statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl.

Police say once officers arrived, McClure grabbed a gun from inside the shop and held it to his head.  The two officers took cover and a SWAT team and hostage negotiator were called in.  After about three hours, McClure surrendered.

He was charged Friday in connection with the rape as well as third degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon.  McClure is in jail on $75,000 cash bond.

The girl is not a relative of McClure’s according to police.

St. Louis media covered the story heavily, with live reports from the scene during their evening newscasts, including NBC affiliate KSDK.
