Wii want to know. Can your baseball card collection do this?
The new Nintendo Wii game system is absolutely the hottest (along with Guitar Hero) item on the Christmas lists of kids and adults around the world. I really haven't seen anything like it. Well, at least not since Pong anyway (yes, I had one).
I write about it only because it kind of illustrates the reason some kids just aren't into baseball cards anymore. Playing games has become so realistic --and so easy to do in your home--that cards just aren't quite as captivating. Card companies feel they really have to dress up their issues with autographs, memorabilia swatches and the like just to keep everyone interested. Plain old cardboard just isn't cutting it for a lot of young people.
The Wii isn't the first big electronic game to hit the market of course. Madden and other realistic sports video games have been around a long time and already drained some of the time away from the idea of collecting. A kid who might have spent time putting sets together would rather compete against his friends using the video versions of his favorite players. It's not surprising.
Luckily, there are enough kids for whom a Wii console isn't the be all and end all. A lot of them still want sports card boxes and packs for Christmas. Even if they're treating them sort of like lottery tickets--hoping for a big autograph score--at this point, it's probably not a good idea to complain. Be grateful there's still interest. Kudos, too, to the marketing idea that put cards in those video games. To quote a famous ale commercial... brilliant!
If you have a Wii console for sale, you're probably more popular than you have been in awhile. You'll also be able to buy some nice gifts for yourself with the proceeds judging from some of the selling prices.
