West Coast Show Opens Friday |

The Labor Day show in San Francisco is no more, but west coast collectors still have a place to go this weekend.
The Los Angeles Sports Collectors Expo sets up shop for a three-day run beginning Friday at the Hollywood Park Casino and Convention Center (now there's a dangerous combination ---card show and slot machines).
It's sort of the left coast's version of the National each year, with over 300 tables and a lineup of autograph guests. Among the signers this year: Jim Rice, Gaylord Perry, Elvin Hayes, Isiah Thomas and Jerry Lucas. The show starts Friday at 2 and picks up Saturday and Sunday at 10 AM. $9 gets you in; $15 for a multi-day pass.
Autograph Certification Experts (ACE) will be on-site to provide signed in presence authentication for items autographed for collectors at the event.
Collectors can get their items authenticated after getting their autographs at the booth located at the exit of the autograph stage. Authentication will be provided for $8 per item signed at the show.
By the way, I've always wanted to have Jerry Lucas sign a copy of the Manhattan phone directory. Back in his Knicks playing days, the word was that he had memorized it cover to cover and has superhuman ability to commit huge volumes of material to memory. If you see him there, ask him about it.
The 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle rookie graded SGC 96 in Memory Lane's current auction already stands at $75,000. The auction opened for bidding just last weekend.
A Beckett graded 10 Joe Montana rookie card went unsold on eBay a few days ago despite a supposed high bid of nearly $48,000. The reserve wasn't met.
Say what?
Now, I respect Beckett grading but why would someone pay $50,000 or more for that card, when a PSA or SGC-graded mint card sells for "only" a few thousand on a good day? Talk about power in the hands of a grader. |
