Just when you thought trading card manufacturers couldn't possibly find a piece of game-used or game-worn equipment they hadn't put on a trading card comes Panini Prime Ties. The 1/1 redemption cards feature the laces from the tops of NHL player jerseys. They're just wacky enough to be creating a bit of an online buzz.
Prime Ties are among the big hits in 2011-12 Panini Prime Hockey, which was released recently as a product still tied to last season. Several dozen cards are in the checklist. They're not included in packs because of the obvious iss
ues of size created by the bulging laces, sort of an old school type hockey jersey. The backs feature an action photo of the player and a short write-up.
It's the first time hockey jersey laces have been used as memorabilia cards. Yahoo! Sports blogger Harrison Mooney gave the idea a thumbs up .
They aren't all NHL game-worn.
Some were apparently cut from jerseys in the Rookie Showcase game. Ten of the unredeemed redemption cards were up for sale on eBay as of late Thursday while about a half dozen of the cards have been sold at prices ranging from $154 to $599.
Packs of Panini Prime retail for around $200 with five cards per pack and include one autograph and two memorabilia cards. Here's what's currently available on eBay.
