It might not be quite as exciting as his rookie year contract, but an interesting piece of football history has put the legend of John Unitas in touch with the Baltimore Colts well before his 1956 debut.
He was like every other college student looking for work.
John Unitas was a lightly-regarded quarterback at the University of Louisville when a scout sent his report to the Baltimore Colts. It glowed with praise but didn't help. Unitas wound up as a 9th round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, but did eventually wind up in the Charm City the following year. The rest, of course, is history.
A scout's 1954 paperwork, postmarked from Louisville and sent to the Colts--has been discovered in Maryland and is being sold by an auction company this weekend.
