Sale of Vintage Hockey Set Broke Record
Collectors of old hockey cards salivated, then bid heavily on a 1920s William Patterson set.
Montreal-based Classic Collectibles recently sold a 1923-24 William Paterson V145-1 complete hockey card set of 40, including the extremely rare Bert Corbeau card. The selling price was $136,538 US. Classic says the sale sets a new record for the public sale of any hockey card set.
The highly sought-after card set was offered in Classic’s most recent Jacques
Laperriere auction.
Classic specializes in hockey memorabilia and has sold the private collections
of Jean Beliveau, Bobby Hull, Marcel Dionne, Guy Lafleur, Darryl Sittler as well as the estates of Rocket Richard, Toe Blake and Howie Morenz among many others. Classic holds records for a game worn NHL jersey (1979 Wayne Gretzky – $145,000), Stanley Cup ring (1961 Bobby Hull -$85,000), game used hockey stick (1971 Jean Beliveau – $17,500) and a Stanley Cup trophy (1957 Jean Beliveau – $42,000).
