PSA slapped a 10 grade on a ’72 Topps Mays and it cost one bidder $8100.
If a collector had gone to sleep ten years ago and woke up to find a relatively modern card star selling for more than the price of 10 sets of the product, he’d think we’d all gone nuts.
But when PSA slabs talk, some collectors not only listen, they chase relentlessly.
A 1972 Topps Willie Mays (#50) graded PSA 10 (gem mint), sold Tuesday afternoon for $8100.
18 bids were made, most by three collectors including one with a feedback of only 3, which seemed curious. However, the buyer seems quite legitimate and the New Jersey seller has to be thrilled.
