Old Autograph Changes Baseball History

A baseball from the final out at Navin Field turned one Hall of Fame employee into a sleuth.

It’s a minor change…trivial to some maybe. But baseball records are being adjusted because of an inscription on one very old baseball.

Hall of Fame employee Dan Holmes recently set the record straight about the Detroit Tigers’ 1918 season finale.

Holmes stumbled across an interesting piece of memorabilia — a baseball signed by Davy Jones that included a notation— while doing research for his 2004 book, "Ty Cobb: A Biography.”

He recently got around to determining the story behind the autograph–and the history of the ’18 season.

Vintage signed baseballs for sale now.
