Don't throw those hockey wrappers out. Upper Deck wants them back.
The Upper Deck company will chronicle the current NHL season with a new hobby
wrapper redemption program, titled "Biography of a Season."
The program will entice collectors to purchase 2006-07 Upper
Deck and Fleer Hockey card wrappers to exchange for the new exclusive
collectible NHL set. The "Biography of a Season" set features 15 unique
cards based on special events and key player highlights from the
2006-2007 campaign. Examples include "Opening Night", "NHL All-Star
Weekend", "the Playoffs", "the Stanley Cup Finals" and other great
moments captured for cardboard during the season.
Upper Deck senior sports marketing manager Kerri Stockholm explained, "This is a great way for Upper Deck to start the NHL season and thank hockey fans for supporting our brands through the years by rewarding them with a special card set highlighting the most memorable moments of the season."
In order to obtain cards of the "Biography of a Season" set, collectors
must exchange five wrappers of 2006-07 Upper Deck or Fleer hockey
products to receive each card. Wrappers can be redeemed at
participating US and Canadian hobby stores. Wrappers from the following
hockey products are applicable: Victory, Ultra, Flair Showcase, Be A
Player Portraits, Power Play, Fleer, Artifacts, Upper Deck Series 1,
Mini Jersey Collection, Black Diamond, MVP, Trilogy, and SPx.
According to Stockholm, the program will begin on November 10 and the
selected cards will be available on the 1st and 15th of each following
month through the beginning of June, making them available for
collectors on a bi-weekly basis. Cards will be sent to hobby
distributors and Upper Deck direct accounts. Quantities will be
determined by sales history of NHL product for each store. Hobby shops
will distribute directly to the collector upon redemption of the
appropriate wrappers.
Earlier this fall, Upper Deck announced plans for 200 hobby stores to serve as "redemption centers" for some of the company's insert cards, hopefully reducing the backlog of redemption submissions to the company.
