Topps will keep the late Cory Lidle in the company's 2006 Updates and Highlights set...with one change.
Topps was in the midst of finalizing the company's 2006 season-ending set the day before Yankees' pitcher Cory Lidle was in an airplane accident in New York.
Lidle, who had been traded from the Phillies to the Yankees during the season, was a natural for the set that pictures players who've changed teams since the original '06 cards were produced. The set was scheduled for a November 6 release.
The company's dilemma was whether to pull the Lidle card entirely or keep it with the set. The decision was made to include Lidle but alter the format of the design, placing an "in memoriam" tag on the front.
