For the second time in less than a year, Topps has been forced to add a 'memorial' tag to one of its late-season baseball issues.

2007 Josh Hancock Topps cardTopps had planned to issue a special St. Louis Cardinals World Championship factory box with its complete set packaging later this summer.

The special Cardinals box included an additional five exclusive cards not found in the regular 2007 Topps Series. One of the five players was pitcher Josh Hancock. It would be only his second Topps card ever and his first since 2005.

Hancock, of course, was killed over the weekend in a traffic accident in St. Louis. In an e-mail received by SportsCollectorsDaily.com Tuesday morning, spokesman Clay Luraschi said Topps felt that "the proper thing to do" was to pull Hancock’s scheduled card and change the format of the design. Topps has made changes to include the words “In Memoriam 1978-2007”.

The sets are scheduled to be shipped in July.

Last season, the companyy edited the Cory Lidle card that was part of its annual 'update' set issued in the fall. Lidle, not long after having been traded to the New York Yankees, was killed in a plane crash over the city.

Tuesday, the National Transportation Safety Board said it is still unsure if Lidle was piloting the plane that day.
