When the judge is about to throw the book at you, it's time to call the Hail Mary.

One Illinois man let a 'friend' stay at his apartment after breaking up with his girlfriend. No good deed goes unpunished. After he finally moved out, the roommate stole a few thousand dollars worth of sports cards and memorabilia.

In court, Mike Cooper admitted to the theft, but told the judge it happened while he was still living with his buddy Steve Porter...thus hoping for a charge that didn't include the word "burglary".

The judge was not impressed.
