The 2006 football card season extended into 2007 and a late-season product has picked up a major award.
Donruss Playoff won Beckett Football's reader's choice award for Product of the Year and Best New Product from the magazine's readers and editors for "National Treasures."
The "Best of 2006" awards in the Readers’ Choice designation were chosen by readers of both the print and online editions of Beckett Football. Thousands of votes were cast during the month of February. The Editors’ Choice designation was chosen by the magazine and price guide editors.
If there is such a thing as rare football cards in a modern day product, National Treasures might have fit the bill. Many of the cards were 1/1.
“For years Donruss Playoff has done a phenomenal job delivering rare retired player memorabilia cards to the hobby, but what we saw in Playoff National Treasures blew us away,” says Beckett Football editor David Lee. “With memorabilia and/or autographs from just about every vintage player that matters, National Treasures is the most comprehensive retired player product ever produced, and it shows with the awards it claimed.”
"It's a tremendous honor since these awards are voted on by collectors," said Donruss/Playoff Football Brand Manager Ben Ecklar. “We spent over a year producing National Treasures, making sure that every aspect of the product delivered value. We've already started on '07 and collectors are going to be pleasantly surprised with what we have in store to raise the bar even higher."
Donruss Playoff has won the award three years in a row. The 2004 Product of the Year was Playoff Contenders and the 2005 Product of the Year was Leaf Limited.
