Football card collecting paid off for Dale Johnson. He'll soon be learning the difference between pounds and dollars.
A Florida collector is heading to London to watch the first-ever NFL regular season game played in Europe.
Dale Johnson, from Jacksonville Florida and long time collector, was the winner announced by Donruss Friday.
The game, being played between the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins, will be held at Wembley Stadium on October 28.
"I had a hard time sleeping last night, I just couldn't believe we won something," Johnson said. "I've been collecting football cards since I was about eight and I can remember buying the Donruss (Jose) Canseco rookie card back in the day. I still buy a lot of cards for my grandchildren."
To enter, collectors had to send an entry card found in packs of 2007 Score football found exclusively at Wal-Mart stores or enter via mail to the Donruss headquarters. The prize package includes two game tickets, airfare and hotel accommodations.
"When we heard about this game, we contacted the NFL and asked them how we could get involved," said Donruss Vice President Mike Anderson. "We were able to get a promo set produced and thought since we were going to be handing out trading cards at the game, why not send a passionate collector to enjoy it."
Anderson was referring to the fact that Donruss will be handing out trading cards to commemorate the game. Donruss has produced a special 6-card commemorative set for the NFL that will be distributed to fans in attendance to the game and the events surrounding it. The set features New York Giants Eli Manning, Steve Smith and Jeremy Shockey as well as the Miami Dolphins Jason Taylor, Ted Ginn and Ronnie Brown.
Each of the 10 first place winners will receive an authentic NFL mini-helmet signed by one of the top rookies from the 2007 draft class. Mini-helmets being awarded include Brady Quinn, JaMarcus Russell and Calvin Johnson.
