Matty Money: 1914 Cracker Jack Card Sells for $22K

“My eyes are ever misty
As I pen these lines to Christy;
My heart is full of heaviness today.
“May the flowers ne’er wither, Matty
On your grave in Cincinnati
Which you’ve chosen for your final fadeaway.”

-Ring Lardner, 1925

1914 Cracker Jack Christy Mathewson

It’s not mint. No doubt about that. True vintage baseball card collectors know, however, that finding any 1914 Cracker Jack Hall of Famers in even reasonably good shape is like trying to hit a Christy Mathewson fadeaway.

Man on the Rock Cards out of Seattle, Washington recently offered a ’14 Matty (graded SGC 40) on eBay and would-be buyers flocked to the listing. It closed Monday night with a winning bid of nearly $23,000.

The 1914 Cracker Jack set is one of the most popular pre-War issues.

An uncirculated, high grade set sold in 2003 for $800,000 with much fanfare.
