It turns a common card into a pricey one and sometimes rewrites baseball history. Hall of Fame election is far from a perfect process.

Ever looked at a baseball card of a player and didn't know he was in the Hall of Fame?

Ever looked at one and thought he should be?

The Baseball Writers Association and Veterans Committee keep the inductee list short year after year but sometimes they've voted players and executives into Cooperstown's hallowed halls without a lot of real thought.

In a story written before Goose Gossage was elected last winter, one writer offered up some arguments--and got some in return-- challenging the credentials of certain inductees.
