Upper Deck Icons Brett Favre Jets football cardBrett as a Jet, plus autographed cards from old school football stars, rookies and current Pro Bowlers highlight the release---and yes, there is at least one political chase element in the mix.

For football fans, this is the best time of year. Everyone’s team is in first place and every fan is confident their team will be a Super Bowl contender. With less than a week left before the regular season kicks off, Upper Deck is debuting its 2008 NFL Icons release.

Signature cards featuring superstars Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Tony Romo, Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson highlight the product. Vintage football icons like Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, Emmitt Smith, Jim Brown, Joe Theismann and Bo Jackson were also added. And to bring the product full circle, 2008 NFL Icons also includes autographs of rookies like Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, Matt Ryan, Chad Henne, Chris Long, Joe Flacco and others.

Among the inserts are “Movie Letterman” cards of celebrities who played in football-themed movies. There are signed and unsigned “Movie Letterman” cards of Billy Dee Williams, who portrayed Gale Sayers in “Brian’s Song”; Burt Reynolds who starred in “The Longest Yard”; Kurt Russell from “The Best of Times”; Goldie Hawn from “Wildcats”; and Ed O’Neill from “Little Giants” and also from the hit TV series “Married with Children.” O’Neill has one version that will spell out his last name and one that will spell “Polk High” which is a reference to his “Married with Children” character.

Additionally there are exchange cards for other unsigned “Letterman” cards. Collectors who find an exchange card for McCain/Obama will receive a “Letterman” card of whichever candidate ends up winning the White House and nine cards together will spell out “President.” There are also predictor “Letterman” exchange cards for the AFC and NFC Offensive Rookie of the Year. Lastly, collectors can get Brett as a Jet with Brett Favre “Letterman” exchange cards. If they put them all together, Brett’s cards will either spell out “Broadway Brett” or “New York Jets.”

“In a sea of similarity, 2008 NFL Icons rises above the rest to give collectors superior and innovative content that has not been seen before,” said Gregg Kohn, Upper Deck’s Football product manager. “There are plenty of autograph and memorabilia cards, but the look is different as they are printed on stunning rainbow board. Some inserts are also die-cut to give Icons its own look. The addition of these ‘Letterman’ cards is really designed to give collectors a new collecting experience we think they will enjoy.”

Upper Deck’s 2008 NFL Icons carries a suggested retail price of $9.99 per six-card pack, with 10 packs per box. Boxes and singles have begun popping up on eBay.
