A shout out to the 1960s is planned at the University of Illinois this weekend and game-worn equipment collectors will get a chance to grab some throwback style gear.
University of Illinois Athletics officials have announced that the Dick Butkus-era throwback uniforms worn by the Fighting Illini football team during the Illinois Renaissance celebration Sept. 6 will be auctioned.
Approximately 100 authentic, game-worn uniforms, including helmets, will be available for fans to bid on. In addition, at least one No. 50 Butkus jersey and one No. 77 Harold "Red" Grange jersey will be auctioned.
"These uniforms look fantastic and are going to be a great collector's item," Assistant Athletic Director Marty Kaufmann said. "The auctions are going to be a great opportunity for our fans to get a keepsake from this momentous occasion and will allow the athletic department to offset the cost of the uniforms."
Illinois, featuring star quarterback Juice Williams, takes on in-state rival Eastern Illinois at the newly renovated stadium. Illinois will honor its all-time greats during the game, including Butkus.
Fans and collectors can check out the auctions by clicking the "Auctions" link under the "Multimedia" menu on FightingIllini.com.
Butkus was a two-time All-American in 1963 and 1964, leading the Illini to a 1963 Rose Bowl victory. He enjoyed a Hall of Fame career with the Chicago Bears, earning six All-Pro selections. Butkus finished third in the 1964 Heisman Trophy voting and has college football's annual award for the outstanding linebacker named after him.
