Got Juice?
University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics officials announced Wednesday that the Dick Butkus-era throwback helmets worn by the Fighting Illini football team during the Illinois Renaissance celebration Sept. 6 are being auctioned on fightingillini.com through Sept. 29. The 108 authentic, game-worn helmets are available immediately for fans to bid on.
Illinois re-dedicated Memorial Stadium, wearing throwback uniforms. The helmet worn by highly-touted quarterback Juice Williams had already been bid up to $611 as of early Thursday morning.
The helmets correspond with the jerseys and pants that were part of an auction that ended on September 15.
"We had a great response to the online auction of the throwback jerseys and pants," Assistant Athletic Director Marty Kaufmann said. "These helmets may even be more appealing to fans since they can easily be displayed on a desk, shelf, or bar. They will be a great piece of Fighting Illini history to own."
Fans can locate the auctions by clicking the "Auctions" link under the "Multimedia" menu on FightingIllini.com. Proceeds from the auctions will offset the cost of purchasing this entirely new set of uniforms for the Renaissance Celebration game.
