'Outside the Lines' attempts to resuscitate last year's "we found a T206 Wagner" story.
Recent sales of legitimate T206 Honus Wagner cards have gotten enough national publicity to apparently rekindle interest in a something owned by two Cincinnati area men.
The story came to the surface last year when John Cobb and Ray Edwards attempted to sell it--unsuccessfully at a small public auction.
They claim it was found in 1984 and is a long-lost sample of some sort. The antique dealer in whom they trust seems to agree and they've found someone who is willing to date the paper to the 1909-1911 era. But beyond those shaky affirmations, it's been a tough sell.
eBay won't touch it without a grading company's stamp of approval. Cobb and Edwards will allow the antique dealer to store it in his safe, but won't let a grading company touch it unless they're present. Collectors who actually could afford it aren't interested because of a variety of inconsistencies evident in the card's appearance compared to known examples.
Nevertheless, ESPN's Outside the Lines took a hack at the story on Sunday, talking with all the principals--including PSA boss Joe Orlando who tried to politely explain the general hobby position that the card is not going to make the list of all-time great finds:
