Babe Ruth's 712th home run ballBabe Ruth's last three home runs came in the same game. The first of those is about to hit the auction block after 70+ years in the family of the man who caught it that day.

It was May 25, 1935.

Babe Ruth was estranged from the Yankees, and his iconic career was winding down. But the Babe could still hit the long ball.

He greeted Pirates' pitcher Red Lucas with a first inning blast at Forbes Field. A 20 year-old baseball fan named Emmett Cavanaugh was in the right field stands that day and latched onto a nice souvenir. That's really all it was back then--even after he tracked the great slugger down and had him sign it.

He's gone now, but his family has decided the time is right to see what one of the most important home run balls in history will bring at next week's All Star FanFest auction.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the winning bidder will also get some items documenting the ball's history.
