A jersey worn by one of Babe Ruth's teammates on the Boston Red Sox has been consigned to an SCP Auctions sale this fall.
Harry Hooper A vintage Boston Red Sox jersey from the 1916-1918 seasons that was worn by Hall of Fame outfielder Harry Hooper will be among the vintage sports memorabilia and cards featured in an upcoming sale conducted by SCP Auctions.
During the three-year span, the Red Sox won two World Series titles with the help of pitcher Babe Ruth, before he was sold to the New York Yankees in December of 1919.
“This Boston Red Sox jersey is a very rare piece and appeals not only to the Boston baseball fan, but to any fan of baseball history,” said David Kohler, president of SCP Auctions.
Jerseys issued before the 1920s, especially of Hall of Famers, are extremely scarce. The heavy flannel jerseys were often recycled from one year to the next or sent to the minor leagues. Examples that have survived unaltered are often little more than tattered, moth-eaten strips of material. SCP reports that the Hooper jersey is of much higher quality.
The auction is scheduled for November of this year.
The company's recent July auction netted $2.3 million and included items such as Christy Mathewson’s signed first Major League contract which sold for $69,829; a Ty Cobb game-used bat ($48,507) and Bear Bryant’s 1950s Texas A&M football jacket ($27,195).
