But the buzz that sometimes accompanies pieces that wind up in the hands of authenticators gets nowhere without the proper research to back up claims of game use.

Auction houses sometimes find it's easier to do their own homework, which is what David Hunt found himself doing when a caller told him about a vintage Yankees jacket. But not just any warm-up gear. This one was on the back of Lou Gehrig during one of the most historic days in baseball history.

It took a long time to bring it to auction, though. Just another chapter in the world of antique baseball pieces.
