Yankee Stadium Facade Part of Memorabilia Deal

The last iconic pieces of Yankee Stadium are coming down--and some of it is hitting the market.

While the 2009 Yankees head for post-season play, the team's old haunt is slowly being torn down.

The old Yankee Stadium is now home to cranes and other equipment of destruction. Crews are now bringing down the famous white-painted facade that encircled the stands and gave the park its signature look. Its history doesn't really date back to the time of Ruth and Gehrig, but it's still unique.

Years ago, a giant wrecking ball probably would have started smashing away, but with a multi-million dollar memorabilia deal in place, nothing is going to waste including those frieze panels.

"We have to take extra steps to make sure nothing gets damaged," said project manager Joe Byrne. "That's why this process is so costly."

There are five pieces available--two already spoken for in a private sale that netted $150,000. Steiner Sports, the Yankees' memorabilia partner, will sell others and auction and keep at least one to cut up for budget-minded collectors according to a story in the New York Daily News.
