Press credentials once belonging to a well-known writer who covered the most famous World Series of all are on the auction block this weekend.
Press passes for the 1919 World Series are among the baseball memorabilia up for bid in this weekend's Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory Auction.
The credentials are part of a group of items that once belonged to former Cleveland Plain Dealer sports editor Henry P. Edwards. 37 items once used by the man who helped found the Baseball Writers Association of America are included in the sale, which takes place this Saturday.
Hunt Auctions estimates the value of the Edwards lots at $35,000.
The most desirable pieces relate to the infamous 1919 "Black Sox" World Series games against the Cincinnati Reds. Edwards was among those who witnessed the strange events of baseball's darkest hour, when members of the Chicago White Sox were accused of conspiring with gamblers to fix the games.
The items offered in the auction include one "Press Ticket’’ each for the games at Comiskey Park in Chicago and Redland Field in Cincinnati. There is also a pink-colored "Press Box’’ badge for Redland Field.
Hunt Auctions estimates the value of each "Press Ticket’’ at $1,500 to $2,000. As of late Wednesday, bidding stood at between $750-1000 for each of the '19 Series items.
Edwards' press credentials for Game four of the 1918 World Series between the Red Sox and Cubs at Fenway Park and for two games of the 1920 World Series (Indians vs. Brooklyn Robins) are also on the auction block.
