A player's gift 48 years ago turned into a special family autograph project. But after the 37th signature was added, the jacket went missing...and is now the subject of a dispute between Eddie Kull and Steiner Sports.
Its history dated back to the M&M Boys and the great season of 1961.
48 years later, the New York Yankees are celebrating another title but a team jacket from that historic season remains missing.
The jacket was a gift from backup outfielder Jack Reed to the grandfather of Garden City, New York resident Eddie Kull. The two collected autographs on it, going to card shows and meeting players to add more names to their special memorabilia project. Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Reggie Jackson and Derek Jeter were among those who added their John Hancocks. When Kull came to pick it up from a store after Yogi Berra had added a signature a couple of years back, it was nowhere to be found. The consensus was that it had been stolen.
Police got involved but the autographed jacket never did turn up. Kull's attorney claims the jacket is worth a fortune because of the "emotional value". Store owner Steiner Sports feels bad, but isn't willing to reimburse a figure it believes is far above true market value.
