 Sy Berger didn't save a lot of things during his half-century at Topps, but some interesting memorabilia did make it home and now some of it is heading to the auction block.
He was Mr. Topps to some. “The Father of the Modern Bubble-Gum Card" to others. Sy Berger played a huge role in baseball cards becoming such a big hit during post-War America.
The retired executive spent nearly 50 years at the company, making deals and helping create products kids ate up as much as the bubble gum they were sold with.
Berger brought home a few things to his children over the years, some of which will appear in the April 2009 sale to be conducted by Robert Edward Auctions.
Highlighting the collection consigned by the Berger family is a group of 117 original  artworks used to create the 1953 Topps set (including Satchel Paige), the original contracts for the entire 1957-1958 Topps Basketball set including the checks the players signed, and the original contracts for the 1951 Topps Ringside Boxing set.
Berger created the Topps Rookie All Star team awards and three complete sets of the 1964 issue are included with their original boxes as well as the contracts for another Berger idea--the 1987 K-Mart boxed set that included numerous stars and Hall of Famers.
The REA auction is scheduled for April of 2009.
