This is one piece of sports memorabilia that might be hard to hide from your wife.
The University of Notre Dame's desire to replace its twelve year-old scoreboard with something a little flashier was music to the ears of Steiner Sports, which offered to auction the giant piece of electronic wizardry.
The Fighting Irish took its partner up on the offer and now, the 40-foot long scoreboard is listed for auction.
"It's simply for a technology upgrade," ND senior associate athletic director John Heisler told the South Bend Tribune. "The new ones will have LED displays on both the display part and the message boards. And there may be a new color scheme on the NBC logo."
Minimum bid is $1988 and as of early Thursday morning, one bid had been placed.
Notre Dame is in its second year of an exclusive partnership that allows Steiner to sell school memorabilia.
According to Steiner's Pete Kelly, all proceeds from the scoreboard auction go back to the Notre Dame athletic department. Steiner is also no doubt using the auction to generate publicity for its business, which includes the Notre Dame deal.
The auction runs through July 27.
