The sheriff's office in Randolph County, North Carolina got to work after a Utah man told them a local resident had taken a big credit card payment and not only failed to deliver the expensive baseball card---he stole his identity.
If you've ever sent payment for an item and not received it, you know it can be maddening. But your troubles were nothing compared to what one sports memorabilia dealer in Utah went through.
 He says he sent Brian Keith Combs of Thomasville, North Carolina his credit card number to pay for an expensive baseball card. Not only was the card not delivered, charges started showing up that he didn't authorize.
It was part of a long-running scam, according to police, who describe Indiana native Combs as "the quintessential con artist".
It's a big-time case of identity theft and outright fraud according to the Randolph County, North Carolina sheriff's office. And according to a local newspaper, they think it's just part of a bigger scam.
