Two Leroy Nieman Originals, Shea lockers of Mays and Ryan; a Jackie Robinson game-used bat and a Babe Ruth signed contract receipt join the recently discovered 19th century advertising poster in the next major catalog sale.
With the major find of an 1889 baseball advertising poster already calling attention to Lelands.com spring catalog auction, the company has released its full listing of lots for an auction that will go live on the Internet on May 8, and conclude on June 12.
Attention has been drawn to the 1889 find, which advertises the Goodwin Round Album, available by sending in coupons from Goodwin Tobacco. Cap Anson is the most prominent player on the poster, of which only two others have been identified, with this size being a unique find. On the sports memorabilia circuit, it may indeed be one of a kind. The reserve is $45,000.
There are, additionally, two original Leroy Neiman paintings, one of Super Bowl MVP John Riggins (reserve, $100,000) and one of fellow Redskin Larry Brown, used for a Newsweek cover (reserve $50,000), both of which are not only important pieces of sports memorabilia from the preeminent sports artist of his time, but also valuable works of art onto themselves.
Two Shea Stadium lockers used by Nolan Ryan ($5000) and Willie Mays ($5000) are also in the sale. While both were more associated with other teams, Ryan’s only World Series came as a Mets phenom, and Mays wrapped up his career and hit his final home runs while with the Mets, in the city where it all began for him.
Babe Ruth memorabilia includes a signed receipt for the September 1918 payment of his contract for that year, which includes acknowledgement of his being reserved for 1919, which would be his last year with the Red Sox. (Reserve: $5,000). Ty Cobb is represented in the auction with a never-before auctioned lot from his 1917 “Somewhere in Georgia” movie appearance, including stock in the production company and two-sided lobby cards, seven of them with his image. (Reserve: $5,000).
A Jackie Robinson game-used bat, certified with provenance trail from Jackie’s widow Rachel, carries a reserve of $5,000. Other game-worn apparel continues with a 1940s Ted Williams Red Sox jacket, a 1974 Pele-autographed Santos jersey, Johnny Bench’s jersey from his retirement night, when he hit his 389th record-setting home run (for catchers), Leroy Goldsworthy’s 1937-38 Boston Bruins sweater, and Walter Payton’s last regular season game worn jersey, in which he set the all-time rushing record. All have $5,000 reserves.
There is also an ungraded, 1950-51 Toleteros Josh Gibson trading card, accepted as the only contemporary trading card ever issued of him, a bat from the 1910s used by Negro League star Louis Santop, ($10,000 reserve), and a 1930s game worn jacket from Negro League pitching star “Bullet Joe” Rogan. ($10,000).
Rings and trophies from elite events are offered, including Lou Whitaker’s full size 1984 Detroit Tigers World Series championship trophy, and championship rings from Guy LeFleur (1976 Canadiens), Marvis Nash (2000 Ravens Super Bowl), Anthony Jones (Redskins, Super Bowl XXII), Godfrey Myles (Cowboys, Super Bowl XXVIII), Klaus Wilmsmeyer (49ers, Super Bowl XXLX), Larry Brown (Redskins, Super Bowl XXX), Michael Carter (49ers, Super Bowl XXIV) and rings from the 2007 Boston Red Sox and 2002-03 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (all at $5,000 reserve).
The complete auction contains over 1000 lots, and full descriptions may be viewed at the auction house’s website, www.Lelands.com, beginning next week.
