Former NBA star and coach Dan Issel's money problems have led to an auction of personal property, including some of his hoops jewelry.
Dan Issel was one of the best players of his generation, but the former Kentucky Wildcat, Kentucky Colonel and Denver Nugget has run into some rough financial waters. Issel declared bankruptcy on June 30 and now some of his memorabilia that was seized by the court is scheduled to be sold.
The items are being auctioned by Roller and Associates as part of a larger sale.
Among the lots is a small collection of awards Issel earned during his career and in the community. Of interest to sports collectors are several of Issel's rings, including a 1975 ABA Championship team 25th anniversary edition. Issel was a key member of the Kentucky Colonels and the ring features the league's red, white and blue ball.
Other lots include Issel's 1969 Look All-America Team ring with a purple center stone and several gold stars on the side, a 1970 class ring Issel received from the University of Kentucky and his 1989 NBA All Star ring with the name "Issel" and the NBA logo engraved on one side. Issel's career was over by then, but he participated in the NBA Legends game.
Issel declared bankruptcy this summer, claiming he was more than $4.5 million in debt from bad investments and loans. The money raised from the sale of items belonging to Issel and his wife Cheryl will go to pay off some of those obligations.
