1953 Topps Mickey Mantle PSA 9Mickey Mantle's second Topps card in near perfect condition led the latest major auction of vintage sports cards.

A 1953 Topps Mickey Mantle card drew the attention of some serious vintage baseball card collectors well into the wee hours of Wednesday.

Set to close Tuesday night, bidding for the PSA 9 (mint) graded card finally ended with a realized price of $87,767 when Mile High Card Company closed out its October auction. The card received 19 bids and accounted for a significant portion of the auction's total sales figure of $2.8 million.

Two other 1953 Topps Mantle cards also sold; a PSA 8 for $12,788 and an SGC 86 for $4066. A 1951 Bowman Mantle rookie card brought $18,160 in a PSA 8 holder.

1954 Wilson Weiners Ted Williams PSA 8.5A rare high-grade 1954 Wilson Franks Ted Williams (PSA 8.5) and a 1914 Cracker Jack Joe Jackson (SGC 84) each ended at $56,865, while a 1903 Breisch Williams Cy Young, graded SGC 60, sold for $53,356.

A completely graded 1956 Topps baseball set realized $30,788 while what is likely the best 1963 Fleer football set in existence ended at $11,878.

Among the baseball cards of more recent vintage was a 1973 Topps Nolan Ryan. Some lucky collector or dealer saw it anointed with a PSA 10 rating and the consignor was even more fortunate to see this modern-era beauty skyrocket to $28,644, easily a record-setting price for any Ryan card from the era.

Not all of the big prices were attached to vintage cards, but having some kind of historical attachment didn't hurt. A 2006 Topps Co-Signers insert card featuring signatures of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson brought $11,070.

Other auction items ended with the following bids:
  • 1952 Topps Andy Pafko #1 black back SGC 88 $26,045
  • 1912 T202 Hassan Triple Folders Chance Beats Out a Hit PSA 9 $23,564
  • 1915 Cracker Jack Ty Cobb SGC 88 $22,077
  • 1929 Star Player Candy Babe Ruth SGC 88 $20,388
  • 1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson rookie SGC 96 $18,160
  • High-grade set of Hartland Statues $7577
